By 2027, the familiar 1D EAN/UPC barcode will transition to the 2D GS1 Digital Link standard. This upgrade embeds a web link into barcodes, connecting physical products to online information such as GTIN, expiration dates, lot/batch numbers, and warranty details.
Zebra will enable GS1 Digital Link through firmware updates for various scanners starting April 2025, with full rollout by the end of 2025.

Step 1 – Update Your Scanner Firmware
- • Open 123Scan, select your scanner, and run the firmware update.
- • Confirm GS1 Digital Link support in the Release Notes section.
Step 2 – Enable GS1 Digital Link
- • In 123Scan, go to the Symbologies tab.
- • Select GS1 Digital Link from the dropdown and check the Enable box.
- • Choose your mode:
- Mode 1: GTIN only
- Mode 2: All/some 2D data (recommended)
- Mode 3: Match 1D and 2D GTINs
Step 3 – (Optional) Configure Data Parsing
- • Use the Modify Data tab in 123Scan to customize what data is captured and how it’s formatted.
